First Love (1973-1976)

Why did I forsake thee, O, my First Love?
Thou Didst hold me to thee as a sweet, gentle dove!
Protectively, with Thy mighty right arm,
Thou didst keep me from all the world’s harm!

Words of compassion, mercy and love were your lure,
And, somehow, in your love I knew I was secure!
Thou didst truly speak words of truth and wisdom,
Promising me a portion of Thy grand and glorious kingdom!

Yet, even so, I allowed my eyes to become blind,
Now, in sin, my soul is confined!
With unclean hands, I have touched the world’s treasure,
Leaving you, my Love, for earthly pleasure!

In my soul—distortion and confusion now abound,
Crying out to you, Love, I long to drive out the sound.
And though my heart lies saying, “All is lost! Thou has failed the test”!
Your words, my Love, beckon, “Come, I will give thee rest”!
